Stations of the Cross -  St Anne's Catholic Church, Alpena, MI                                                                            VanderMoere Studios
The stations of St Anne's, as it is with many of the stations that I have worked on, were originally painted in colors; and at some point in their history, were overpainted with white paint. The frames of these stations are 7' tall and permanently mounted to the wall. This made the task particularly challenging as I had to assemble scaffold, one station at a time, and remove it at the end of each week. It also made it challenging to carry the story from one station to the next. When Jesus was cut, battered and bruised, these marks had to remain consistent with each proceeding station. I was able to utilize the flat background to help tell the story of the statues as he  travels through the city and beyond the city walls to his eventual death. As he is put to death, his skin tones change. Notice the coloring of the sky as it becomes more intense leading to his final breath.

Station 8 was chosen for me to conduct exposures to reveal to the parish that the stations, indeed, had originally been painted. It was then re-painted to aid with raising funds to complete the project. The first weekend, after the FIRST Sunday Service, all the stations were paid for !
